Its that time of year again………time to buy presents for local shelter and rescue cats and dogs. All of the the dogs that are part of the Amy’s Natural Pet Pantry family (Gypsy, Harry, Fin, Roscoe and Brisk….and Lily the Cat) were at one time either in a shelter or part of a rescue group. We try to support rescue efforts whenever we can because we know that amazing animals end up homeless often through no fault of their own. This year we are extending our support to include the dogs of “Aussie and Me” Rescue as well as the cats and dogs of Satchel’s Last Resort. In the store we have a tree full of ornaments with photos of cats and dogs from these organizations. On the back of the ornament is a gift request, it could be considered a suggestion, because anything you purchase for them is greatly appreciated. When you purchase an item for the dog or cat you then get to keep the ornament as a reminder of the pet you helped this Christmas. We will deliver all of the items to Satchel’s and Aussie and Me on the 23rd and 24th so everyone will have their treats before Christmas. We did this last year with Satchel’s Last Resort and had such a good time taking all of the toys, treats, beds, supplies out to the dogs and cats on Christmas Eve! So while you are in shopping for gifts for your own or your friend’s pets, pick up something extra for those who do not have the best gift of all….a home for the rest of their lives. And if you want to give one of them a home for Christmas…..we can arrange that too!

Thrive – Not Just Survive!
There are many factors to having a healthy pet. Food choice is one of the most important. We stock a variety of types and brands of foods for both dogs and cats that will help your pets thrive. There is not one perfect food for every pet, so please come in an let us assist you in the best choice for you. Supplements are an important factor for optimal health also. Young and old can benefit from the addition of some basic supplementation to their diet – just like we can. We have many choices from the very basic to ones designed to address specific disease processes. And finally we need to be aware of all of the environmental toxins our pets are exposed to and do everything we can to minimize these exposures. These toxins include herbicides and pesticides used in the home and neighborhood (or dog park), spot-on flea and tick chemicals, toxins in food and water, and over-vaccinations and de-wormers. Come by Amy’s and let us show you the products we have that will help your pet Thrive – not just survive!

It was my first try and I have to learn how to use the ramp to get out of the pool – so I first have to be lured in. I love the beach but this pool thing is kind of new to me. I had LOTS of fun though! And then went to a friend’s house to relax on a float for the afternoon!

Does your dog/cat suffer from digestive upset and gas or bad breath or occasional vomiting? The addition of a digestive enzyme supplement can help these and many other common ailments of our companion dogs and cats. You wouldn’t at first think that good GI tract health affects problems like allergies and immune system function, and even arthritis and other bone and joint problems, but it does.

Digestive enzymes generally come in a powder or capsule form that you add directly to your pet’s food. Most of them have no scent or flavor so even the pickiest of eaters will accept them. Even the best quality dry and canned pet foods have undergone a certain amount of processing and the ingredients that have gone into these foods have lost some of their enzymatic properties. The addition of digestive enzymes helps our pets absorb the most from the foods that we feed them. It is especially beneficial for older pets because as the system ages, natural enzymatic activity deceases.

Pre and/or Pro Biotics are often added to the digestive enzyme products and serve to help the GI tract out even more. They aid in the digestion and absorption of nutrients, and are involved in metabolic processes that influence the health and functioning of all of the other processes in the body. The Royal Society of Medicine of Great Britain recently reported that 90% of chronic diseases are caused from an unhealthy intestinal system in people – I would think the percentage for dogs and cats is close to that if not higher.

So if you think this is something you would like to try for your pets (we have them for small animals and birds too), please stop by Amy’s Natural Pet Pantry and we will show you the types and brands we carry. We will be happy to help you pick the one that will work best for your pet!

Today I want to spotlight a food that Amy’s Natural Pet Pantry has carried for a long time - but over the past year we have come to realize what an awesome food it is. The food is ZiwiPeak and it is marketed as an air-dried “raw” food. It is not really raw, but it is really close, and has the convenience of not requiring refrigeration or freezing for those who are leery of frozen raw foods. The food received the Dog Food Advisor’s 5-Star rating (out of 5 possible stars) which is not easy to do. ZiwiPeak is made of 100% all natural ingredients, all sourced from the grass-fed pastures and surrounding oceans of New Zealand. Their foods contain no added sugars, salts, glycerines, antibiotics, hormones, preservatives or carbohydrates such as potatoes, grains, rice, beet pulp, wheat glutens or cornmeal. ZiwiPeak products do not contain BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin or propylene glycol. All ZiwiPeak products are GMO free. New Zealand is world renowned and highly respected for its clean, green, high quality meat, fish and shellfish ingredients. It is also the only country in the world where green lipped mussels are available, famous for their joint-healing properties because they contain high levels of glucosamine, chondroitin and omega 3 and 6. They are included in the ZiwiPeak formulas. All of the air-dried product is produced in Ziwi’s main factory in Mount Maunganui – a facility they own and operate. Three varieties are available in the air-dried: venison, lamb, and venison and fish.

Not only do we (and Gypsy, Fin and Harry) like the food’s ingredients, we also like the company.

New Zealand leads the world in the development and management of sustainable resource programs. The country also prides itself on strict bio-security laws. All ZiwiPeak ingredients are managed within these strictly controlled sustainable resource programs and standards.

ZiwiPeak does not and never has undertaken any form of caged or invasive animal testing or feeding. They are passionate about natural nutrition, and animal welfare, and do not agree with or condone this form of testing in any way. Any feeding trials they undertake are conducted with animal companions in a free feeding environment usually within the circle of the ZiwiPeak family of pets and pets of friends.

So the overall picture is this: It’s an amazing food formulation using carefully selected and monitored and locally sourced ingredients from a very environmentally concious company that happens to also be very passionate about companion animal nutrition – what more could you ask for? So stop by next time you are in the area and get a free sample of this amazing food!

As I was supervising the unpacking of the box, I realized why he smelled so good – the box was full of antlers! Antlers are one of my favorite things to chew on and these are brand new fresh from the farm…….some even have velvet still on them…….Yummmmmmy! And then my friend Jim came by from flyball – I get so excited when my flyball teammates come see me at my job. He came in to get his dog Chica some Clear AllerQi to help her with her itchy skin – I use to have red, itchy skin this time of year and it really helped me. I hope it makes her feel better too.

Hi! My name is Gypsy and in my spare time while I am not busy helping customers I thought I would write about my adventures and experiences during my days at Amy’s Natural Pet Pantry. Many of you who shop regularly at the store know me, and any of you who don’t please come by and meet me. I am also called “Miss Wiggles” or “Wiggle Butt” or “Gypsy Rosalie.” I am the official greeter and I love to show everyone my toys. I don’t really want you to take my toy…..although sometimes I will let you have it…..I just really enjoy showing you what I have (and maybe hoping you will chase me). I really, really love my job and all of the people that come in to see me. I am a rescue dog. I came from a great group called Canine Castaways ( www.caninecastaways.org ), who saved me from Animal Control after they had picked me up as a stray. I am a lucky girl that Canine Castaways gave me a chance and that my mom Lisa adopted me from them about 5 years ago. Today we have been busy getting things ready for a Flyball tournament that my team the Barkaholics are hosting in St. Petersburg this weekend. Fin (my adopted little sister) and I do this really fun dog sport called Flyball. It’s like relay racing for a tennis ball over jumps. Check out www.flyball.org/aboutflyball.html for more information. If anyone comes to the store over the weekend, Fin, Harry and I will be off until Monday because we will be at the tournament. I will miss seeing everyone but will have lots to talk about next week. I hope everyone has a great weekend!
